« Il y a deux manières de vivre : les uns marchent sur terre ce qui est tout à fait légitime et respectable, s’appliquant à bien évaluer et à pronostiquer les choses. D’autres marchent sur l’eau. En l’occurrence il est impossible de mesurer les choses, de prévoir. Il suffit d’un moment de doute pour qu’il y ait noyade immédiate ».

L’exposition est consacrée à la vie et au destin d’une grande Sainte orthodoxe du XX siècle, mère Marie Skobtsov qui avait accepté l’émigration comme une mission du Seigneur, comme un don de la liberté en consacrant sa vie entière à l’Eglise. Le témoignage de mère Marie montre la réalité de l’unité, c’est un signe de ce que l’Eglise orthodoxe offre au monde entier.

Nous voyons la vie de mère Marie dans les années précédant la Seconde guerre, l’expérience acquise dans l’émigration, la dimension spirituelle qui la conduit à reconnaitre la pauvreté et la liberté comme des dons de Dieu. Se forme un mouvement orthodoxe axé sur la présence du Christ parmi nous, sur le silence que cette présence induit en nous. C’est là que se situe la source de la vocation monastique de mère Marie. Elle fonde à Paris une maison qui devient un lieu de prière, de culture, d’aide à ceux qui sont dans le besoin. Mère Marie rejoint la Résistance. Elle périt dans un camp de concentration nazi.

L’exposition se termine par l’histoire de la canonisation de mère Marie en 2004 par le patriarcat de Constantinople.

“Ci sono due diverse modalità di vivere: ci si può muovere sulla terra, in modo assolutamente legittimo e rispettabile, misurando, soppesando e prevedendo tutto, ma si può anche camminare sulle acque. E in questo caso non si può né misurare, né prevedere: si può soltanto e ogni volta credere. Un istante di assenza di fede e inizi subito ad affondare”.

La mostra racconta la storia e il destino di una grande santa ortodossa del XX secolo, Madre Maria (Skobcova), che ha accettato la sfida dell’emigrazione come chiamata di Cristo e dono di libertà dedicando tutta la sua vita a costruire la Chiesa. Madre Maria testimonia la possibilità dell’unità ed è un segno che la Chiesa Ortodossa offre a tutto il mondo.

Il percorso della mostra prende avvio dalla formazione di Madre Maria negli anni dell’imminente guerra mondiale, si sviluppa poi nel racconto dell’esperienza dell’ emigrazione, la cui dimensione spirituale genera il riconoscimento della povertà e della libertà come doni di Dio e favorisce la nascita di un Movimento Ortodosso che pone al centro della vita la sequela a Cristo e un attento silenzio di fronte alla Sua Presenza. Da qui prende avvio la vocazione monastica di madre Maria, segue la fondazione della casa parigina, luogo di preghiera, cultura e aiuto concreto ai poveri, e la partecipazione alla resistenza fino alla morte in campo di concentramento. La mostra si conclude con la storia del processo di canonizzazione conclusosi nel 2004, quando è stata annoverata dal Patriarcato di Constantinopoli tra i Santi come martire di Parigi.

“There are two different ways of living: one can walk on earth, in an absolutely legitimate and respectable way, measuring, weighing and foreseeing everything, but one can also walk on water. And in this case we can neither measure nor predict: we can only believe every time. An instant of absence of faith and immediately begin to sink”.

The exhibition tells the story and destiny of a great Orthodox saint of the twentieth century, Mother Maria (Skobcova), who accepted the challenge of emigration as a call from Christ and a gift of freedom by dedicating all her life to building the Church. Mother Mary witnesses the possibility of unity and is a sign that the Orthodox Church offers to the whole world.

The path of the exhibition starts from Mother Mary in the years of the upcoming world war, then develops into a story of an experience of emigration, whose spiritual dimension generates the recognition of poverty and freedom as gifts of God and favors the birth of an Orthodox Movement that places the following of Christ and a careful silence in front of His Presence at the center of life. This is where the monastic vocation of Mother Mary began, following the foundation of the Parisian house, a place of prayer, culture and practical help for the poor, and participation in resistance until death in a concentration camp. The exhibition concludes with the history of the canonization process that ended in 2004, when it was listed by the Patriarchate of Constantinople among the Saints as a martyr in Paris.
